Celebrex No Prescription
Celebrex is prescribed for acute pain, menstrual cramps, and the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis. It is a member of a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) called COX-2 inhibitors. Like older
NSAIDs such as Motrin and Naprosyn, Celebrex is believed to fight pain and inflammation by inhibiting the effect of a natural
enzyme called COX-2. Unlike the older drugs, however, it does not interfere with a similar substance, called COX-1, which
exerts a protective effect on the lining of the stomach. Therefore, Celebrex may be less likely to cause the bleeding and
ulcers that sometimes accompany sustained use of the older NSAIDs.
Celebrex has been found to reduce the number of colorectal polyps (growths in the wall of the lower intestine and
rectum) in people who suffer from the condition called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), an inherited tendency to develop
large numbers of colorectal polyps that eventually become cancerous.
Like other NSAID drug, Celebrex could increase the chance of having a heart attack or stroke, possibly resulting in death.
The risk is greater if you have heart disease or use NSAIDs for a long time. It's important to discuss the risks and benefits
of using Celebrex with your doctor and to use the lowest effective dose for the shortest amount of time possible.
Although Celebrex is easy on the stomach, it still poses some degree of risk-especially if you've had a stomach ulcer or
gastrointestinal bleeding in the past. All NSAIDs, including Celebrex, can cause serious-and even life-threatening-ulcers and
bleeding in the stomach and intestines. These side effects can happen without symptoms and may occur at any time during
treatment. If you've ever had ulcers or stomach bleeding, make sure the doctor is aware of it. And be sure to alert the doctor
if you develop any digestive problems or notice a change in your bowel movement (such as blood in the stool or black,
Celebrex capsules contain the active ingredient celecoxib, which is a type of drug known as a non-steroidal
anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
NSAIDs work by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in
producing prostaglandins, in response to injury or certain diseases. These prostaglandins cause pain, swelling and
inflammation. Because NSAIDs block the production of these prostaglandins, they are effective at relieving pain and
Cyclo-oxygenase does not only produce prostaglandins that cause inflammation. It produces prostaglandins that have
useful roles in the body. There are two different forms of cyclo-oxygenase, COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 is the form that (among
other things) produces prostaglandins that cause inflammation. COX-1 does not produce inflammatory prostaglandins, but does
produce others that have useful effects, including some that are involved in maintaining a healthy stomach and intestinal
Traditional NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or diclofenac, block the action of both COX-1 and COX-2, and this is why they can
sometimes cause side effects such as stomach irritation and peptic ulcers. Celecoxib belongs to a new generation of NSAIDs
that selectively block the action of COX-2. This means that it stops the production of inflammatory prostaglandins, without
stopping the production of prostaglandins that protect the stomach and intestines. It therefore reduces pain and inflammation,
but is less likely than traditional NSAIDs to cause side effects on the stomach and intestines (although such side effects
are still possible).
